Abstract

1,016,339. Measuring continuous lengths of material. J. HANDA AND GOSHI KAISHA TAKAHATA KOGYOSHO. Dec. 17, 1963, No. 49807/63. Heading G1M. In apparatus for measuring automatically a predetermined length of material there is provided means for advancing the material, a wheel adapted to engage the material and to rotate with the advance of the material, a rotatable counting device indicating by a series of dial members the number of revolutions of the wheel, an adjustable indexing member having dial members coaxial with the corresponding dial members of the counting device, electrical switching means movable from an open to a closed position in response to comparable dial members of the counting device and the indexing member and means responsive to said coincidence for stopping the material advance. In one embodiment, see Figs. 1, 2 material is wound round the wheel 1 and index members 18, 19 set to a predetermined position on scales 14, 15 by knobs 22, 23 through seams 26, 24, 20, 38 and 23, 27, 21, 37 respectively. In this position switches S 1 , S 2 are open, S 5 is closed and subsequently S 3 and S 4 are closed. Rotation of wheel 1 causes movement of needle 6 through gears 4, 5 and 7 and consequently of needle 10 through reduction gears 8, 9, 11. When needles 10, 6 have moved to the positions indicated by index members 18, 19, switches S 1 and S 2 are closed simultaneously due to the positions of brushes 38, 39 on shafts 7, 11 of the needles 6, 10 and a relay R activated to stop the motor H. To restart the cycle, knob 47 is depressed against spring 49 to engage gear 50 with gears 42, 43 mounted on shafts 7, 11, thus rotating the gears 42, 43 and subsequently needles 6, 10 to their starting positions. Simultaneously insulating rings 32, 33 are separated from brush members 38, 39 breaking the relay R and the motor is re-started. In a modification (Figs. 5-7, not shown) the insulator rings 32, 33 are substituted by rings 52, 53 formed with arcuate insulated sectors 54, 55. The zero-returning means may comprise (as shown in Fig. 16) a spring-loaded shaft 146 provided with worms 150, 157 engageable with gears 42, 43, rotation of the shaft moving needles 6, 10 to their zero-positions. In a further embodiment, (Figs, 14, 15 not shown) a one-way clutch device is employed. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 26, when the switches S 1 and S 2 are closed motor 412 is actuated causing rotation of shaft 146 through gear 415 and subsequent rotation of gears 42, 43 though worms 150, 151 switches S 1 and S 2 being opened and needles 6, 10 returned to zero-position.
