Abstract

[Also in Division B5] Apparatus for continuously applying unvulcanized rubber to build up a tread or tread and sidewalls on to a buffed tyre or green tyre carcass respectively comprises a calender for producing a calendered rubber strip, means rotatably mounting a tyre carcass to have the strip wound thereon, means for slitting the strip into three ribbons and for removing the central strip, and means for successively changing the width of thestrip and the ribbons incrementally as they are wound on to the carcass to build up a predetermined contour on the carcass. As shown for applying a tread and sidewalls to a green tyre carcass 10 a continuous sheet S of rubber produced by a pair of calender rolls 11 is conveyed through a feed mill 25, which reworks unused material and to which additional rubber may be supplied, back to the rolls 11. The carcass is rotated by contact with the roll 11. Knives 28 cut out a strip 31 which is then cut transversely by a rotary knife 35 (Fig. 5, not shown). The hot strip passes round the rolls 11 and adheres on the carcass 10. The knives 28 are incrementally moved together (see Fig. 7, not shown) on each rotation of the carcass. To provide tread shoulders, knives 38 are pressed against the roll 11 to cut out a centre ribbon 40 which is cut transversely by a knife 45 (Fig. 5, not shown), and returned to the feed mill. The width of the outer ribbons 39 is decreased by incrementally moving the knives 28 together and the knives 38 apart until the required contour has been built up. The ribbons 39 are cut off, the knives 38 are lifted from the roll 11, and the knives 28 are rapidly brought together and lifted to return the sheet S to a full unslit width (see Fig. 4, not shown). To avoid air being trapped between the carcass and the strip, or between successive turns of the strip, the sheet S is vented by a perforating roller. The knives are all pneumatically operated.
