Abstract

A mixture comprising 2-85 mole per cent ethylene and 98-15 mole per cent of a copolymerizable 1-olefinic hydrocarbon containing 3 to 12 carbon atoms is copolymerized using a hydrocarbon soluble catalyst comprising a mixture of an aluminium compound having the formula RAIX2 (where R is a hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 12 carbon atoms and X is a halogen atom) and a vanadium salt of a carboxylic acid to produce a rubbery high molecular copolymer containing between 50 and 85 mole per cent ethylene units and being free of contiguous units derived from said 1-olefinic hydrocarbon. In the example ethylene and propylene are copolymerized in a mixed benzene/chlorobenzene medium with, as catalyst, a mixture of aluminium ethyl dichloride and either vanadium chloro trioctoate or vanadium oxy trioctoate and the reaction is terminated with ethanol. A number of alternative solvent media and catalyst components are listed. Polymerization may also be in bulk. The copolymer may be vulcanized.
