Abstract

1,016,051. Wet spinning polyacrylonitrile. TOGO RAYON KABUSHIKI KAISHA. July 8, 1963 [July 13, 1962; Feb. 13, 1963; Feb. 25, 1963], No. 26997/63. Heading B5B. A polyacrylonitrile solution containing a liquid organic additive boiling within the range 20‹ to 350‹ C., preferably 30‹ to 150‹ C., and which is a refined petroleum distillate fraction, an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon, an ether, a thioether or a carboxylic acid containing at least 5 carbon atoms in the molecule on a monohydric alcohol containing at least 5 carbon atoms in the molecule is wet spun into a coagulating liquid in which the solubility of the additive does not exceed 20% by weight and the resulting filaments are drawn and dried. The proportion of additive in the spinning solution may be 0À5-20%, preferably 1-5% by weight based on the acrylic polymer. The coagulating liquid may be a mixture of a solvent for the polymer and water. The drawing of the filaments may be effected in a mixture of a solvent for the polymer and a liquid coagulant. The drying of the filaments may be effected in a current of gas at 50-98‹ C. and a relative humidity of 30-80%. The gaseous current may contain the vapour of at least one hydrocarbon and/or alcohol boiling below 200‹ C. The gaseous current may contain 5-100% by volume of the vapour and may be at a temperature of 60-200‹ C., preferably 80-150‹ C. The filaments obtained have a " cellular " structure, i.e. they contain voids. The acrylic polymer contains at least 85 mol. per cent of acrylonitrile, and may be a copolymer containing 0À1-2À0 mol. per cent of a monomer having one or more hydrophilic groups in the molecule and/or other monomers copolymerizable with acrylonitrile.
