Azo dyes.-Substantive o-oxyazo dyes are obtained by employing o-oxydiazo compounds of the benzene or naphthalene series in making trisazo and polyazo dyes from tetrazotized diamines, suitable coupling-components, and diazotized monamines; 2 : 5 : 7 - aminonaphthol sulphuric acid 2 : 5 : 1 : 7 - aminonaphthol disulphonic acid, or their derivatives, such as benzoyl-2 : 5 : 7-acid, phenyl - 2 : 5 : 7 - acid, m- or p-aminobenzoyl- 2 : 5 : 7 - acid, 5 : 5<1>- dioxy - 7 : 7<1> - disulpho - 2 : 2<1> - dinaphthylurea, 5 : 5<1> - dioxy - 2 À 2<1> - dmaphthylamine - 7 : 7<1> - disulphonic acid, m- or p-aminophenyl -1 : 2-iminazole - 5 - naphthol - 7 - sulphonic acid, p-aminophenyl - 2 - azimino - 5 - naphthol - 7- sulphonic acid, m- or p-aminophenyl - 1 : 2--thiasole - 5 - naphthol - 7 - sulphonic acid, m- or p-aminophenyl - 1 : 2 - triazole - 5 - naphthol - 7 - sulphonic acid, or 1 - (5<1> - oxy - 7<1> - suipho) naphthyl-3- methyl - 5 - pyrazolone, are particularly suitable as coupling-components. As diamines, benzidine. tolidine, dianisidine, ethoxybenzidine, p-diaminostilbene disulphonic acid, and their substitution products, may be used in all cases; when the 2 : 5 : 7 - or 2 : 5 : 1 : 7-acid or a derivative thereof is employed, there may also be used as diamines diaminodiphenolether, diaminodiphenylamine, m- or p-aminobenzoyl - m- or - p-phenylenediamine. azoxyaniline, azoxytoluidine, m- or p-diaminodiphenylurea, or diaminodiphenylthiourea. According to examples, there are obtained : a trisazo dye, dyeing red-brown shades, by coupling tetrazotized benzidine with one molecule of salicylic acid and in acid solution with one molecule of 2 : 5 : 7 - acid, and coupling the resulting disazo dye with diazotized 4 sulpho - 2 - aminophenol - 6 - carboxylic acid; a trisazo dye, dyeing black-violet, by coupling the monoazo dye picramic acid-azo- 2 : 5 : 7 acid (acid coupling) with the intermediate product from tetrazotized benzidine and one molecule of 1 - naphthol - 4 - sulphonic acid; a tetrakisazo dye, dyeing bluish-bordeaux, by coupling two molecules of 2 - diazopheiiol -4 - sulphonic acid with the disazo dye benzidine - disazo - 2 : 5:7- acid (acid coupling); a tetrakisazo dye dyeing bordeaux shades, by coupling two molecules of 2 - diazophenol - 4-sulpho - 6 - carboxylic acid with the disazo dye p-diaminodiphenylether - disazo - 2 : 5 : 7 -acid (acid coupling); a trisazo dye, dyeing dull blue shades, by coupling tetrazotized dianisidine first with one molecule of the monoazo dye o-aminophenol - azo - 5 : 5<1> - dioxy - 7 : 7<1>- disulpho - 2 : 2<1> - dinaphthylurea, and then with one molecule of 1 - naphthol - 4 - sulphonic acid; a trisazo dve, dyeing blue-violet shades, by coupling tetrazotized benzidine first with one molecule of the monoazo dye from diazotized 1 : 2 : 4-aminonaphthol sulphonic acid p-toluenesulphonic ester and 5 : 5<1> - dioxy - 7 : 7<1> - disulpho - 2 : 2<1> - dinaphthylurea, and then with one molecule of 1-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid, and finally saponifying the ester group; a tetrakisazo dye, dyeing blue shades, by coupling 5-nitro-2-diazophenol with the monoazo dye 2 : 5 : 7 - acid - azo - 2 : 5 : 7 - acid (acid coupling), coupling the product with tetrazotized dianisidine, and finally coupling with 1 - naphthol - 4 - sdphonic acid; a tetrakisazo dye, dyeing blue-violet shades, by coupling tetrazotized dianisidine with two molecules of the monoazo dye 4-nitro - 2 - aminophenol - azo - 5 : 5<1> - dioxy - 7 : 7<1> - disulpho - 2 : 2<1> - dinaphthylurea; a trisazo dye, dyeing steel-blue shades, by coupling tetrazotized benzidine first in acid solution with one molecule of 1 : 8 : 3 : 6-aminonaphthol disulphonic acid, then in alkaline solution with cne molecule of 1 : 8 : 2 : 4 - aminonaphthol disulphonic acid, and coupling the disazo dye with 4 - nitro - 2 - diazophenol; a trisazo dye, dying grey-blue shades, by coupling the intermediate product from tetrazotized benzidine and one molecule of 1-naphthol - 5 - sulphonic acid with the monoazo dye picramic acid - azo - 1 : 8 : 4 - aminonaphthol sulphonic acid (acid coupling); a tetrakisazo dye, dyeing bluegreen, by coupling two molecules of diazotized picramic acid with the disazo dye benzidinedisazo-1 : 8 : 4 : 6-aminonaphthol disulphonic acid (acid coupling); a trisazo dye, dyeing violet shades, by coupling tetrazotized benzidine first with one molecule of 2 : 5 : 7-acid, then with one molecule of the monoazo dye 2 - aminophenol - 4 - sulphonic acid - azo - resorcin; a trisazo dye, dyeing yellow-brown, by coupling diazotized 2- nitro - 6 - aminophenol - 4 - sulphonic acid with the disazo dye from benzidine, salicylic acid, and resorein. The products dye cotton, wool, silk, mixed goods, straw, wood, paper, leather, &c., and can be used in the manufacture of lakes. Specifications 558/93, 21342/95, and 12250/15 are referred to.
