Abstract

[Also in Division F1] A motor vehicle speed-control device comprises a sleeve 5 inserted between a pair of rods la, 1b in the linkage connecting the accelerator pedal 2 with the throttle control 3, the rod la being connected to the sleeve and the rod 1b being connected to a slide 9 which slides within the sleeve and is retained in place by a detent 12 which may be withdrawn against the pressure of a spring 13 by an electromagnet 8 actuated when a contact 16 on the pointer of a speedometer registers with a contact 17 secured to the dial, the circuit also including a switch 18 to disconnect the device. In a modification, (Fig. 12), the detent 12 connects a lever actuated by the accelerator pedal and a lever connected to the throttle valve. Fig. 6 shows a modification of Fig. 1, wherein a rod 1c is connected at a point of reduced leverage to the throttle-operating lever and slides through a hole in a member 5a connected to rod la. At the point where the rods la and 1b are disconnected by the electromagnet, a stop 1d abuts the member 5a and the throttle may still be operated but increased force will be required. In a further modification, Figs. 8 and 9, the throttle valve of the carburetter is actuated by a lever 19 connected through a detent 12, operated by an electromagnet 4, to a lever 20 biased towards the closed position of the valve by a spring 21a, the lever 19 being biased in the same direction by a spring 22a. The lever 20 is actuated from the vehicle accelerator pedal through a cable 1c passing over a segment 20b. As before, the detent 12 is withdrawn at the predetermined speed and the throttle valve is closed but, to meet an emergency, the accelerator pedal may be further depressed until a roller 26 on lever 20 coacta with a lever 23 also connected to the throttle valve and through which the throttle valve may be actuated. Reference is made to an hydraulic coupling the valves of which are actuated electrically at the appropriate speed limit, and also to a control device incorporating a photoelectric cell.
