Abstract

A dried silica, alumina or mixed silica-alumina gel having controlled pore size distribution and controlled pore volume is prepared by mixing the appropriate hydrous gel with at least one water-soluble polymer selected from polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene oxide or glycol, methyl cellulose or polyacrylamide, the total amount of polymer in the mixture being greater than 30% but not exceeding 20,000%, based on the weight of anhydrous oxide in the hydrous gel, with the provisio that when using hydrous silica gel alone the polymer is other than polyvinyl alcohol or polyacrylamide, drying the mixture at not exceeding 250 DEG C., preferably 200-250 DEG C., to set the pore structure of the gel, and finally treating, e.g. by calcination, combustion or hydrogenation, the dried gel to achieve substantially complete removal of the polymer from the dried gel. The polymer may either be dispersed in an aqueous solution of a salt which will yield a gel on precipitation, or it may be added to the hydrous mass of gel after precipitation. Calcining is preferably carried out at 500 DEG to 600 DEG C. in an inert atmosphere, which atmosphere is gradually replaced during calcining by an oxygen-containing atmosphere. After removal of the polymer the gel may be further ground and pelletized.ALSO:A dried, mixed silica-alumina gel having controlled pore size distribution in the range 105 to 20 radius, and controlled pore volume up to 5,0 ml./gm., which is prepared by mixing a hydrous mixed silica-alumina gel with at least one water soluble polymer selected from polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene oxide or glycol, methyl cellulose or polyacrylamide, the total amount of polymer being greater than 30% but not exceeding 20,000%, based on the weight of the anhydrous oxides in the hydrous gel, drying the mixture at not exceeding 250 DEG C., preferably 200-250 DEG C., to set the pore structure of the gel, and finally treating, e.g. by calcination, combustion or hydrogenation, the dried gel to remove the polymer therefrom, may be used as a catalyst material.
