Abstract

1,015,466. Typewriters. N. ZANABONI. Nov. 19, 1962 [Dec. 12, 1961], No. 43607/62. Heading B6F. Type-wheel actions.-A typewriter is provided with a number of keys 10a . . . 10e, Fig. 2, which is lower than the number of type characters carried by a type-wheel 30, and the keys are each connected to a corresponding one of selector members 17a ... 17e, having notches 18 and grooves 19 arranged in such a way that for every depression of one or more of the keys according to any possible combination there corresponds a pro-determined arrangement of said selector members, which position one of a plurality of stopping elements 24 to arrest the type-wheel with a selected type character opposite the platen 76, which is then put in contact with the type-wheel to effect an impression of the character on a second medium 82 carried by the platen. Keyboard and key construction; power drive.- The keyboard comprises five keys 10a . . . 10e, Fig. 2, which are arranged at different levels to correspond to the lengths of fingers and the keys may be depressed singly or in groups in any binary combination (Fig. 10, not shown), to select a pre-determined type character on the type-wheel 30. Each key is provided with a lever 11, fulcrumed idly on a shaft 9, and provided at one end thereof with a flexible rod 13, terminating in a roller 14 engaging a fork 15 of a selector lever 16 and at the other end with a protrusion 12 engaging the bottom of stop-bar 7. Depression of one or more keys lifts the stop-bar 7 to allow stud 5 of a clutch pulley 4 fixedly mounted on driving-shaft 2, to engage an idling gear 3, driven by an electric motor (not shown) so as to rotate the shaft through one revolution, whereupon the bar 7 engages the stud 5 again and disengages the clutch. Key actions; aligning for impression.- A full depression of any key or keys displaces angularly one or more of the selector levers 16, Fig. 2, bringing in turn angular displacement of a corresponding number of selector members 17, whereupon a roller 27 co-operating with a cam 26 fast with shaft 2 operates an oscillating arm 28<SP>1</SP> attached to a ratchet wheel 25 to position an appropriate one of stopping elements 24 into an aligned groove 19 arresting an arm 31 fast with the shaft 20 carrying the slidably mounted typewheel 30. The type-wheel is rotated by a camoperated gear sector 35 engaging a gear 36 mounted for unidirectional direction and acted upon by a spring 43. Alignment for impression is effected by a cam-operated lever 40 whose clamp 41 is spring-urged to engage a pair of teeth of a wheel 42. Partial depression of any key does not displace angularly any of the selector members 17, but the shaft 2, operates a cam 45, Fig. 3, which through a linkage displaces the type-wheel axially one letter space in the direction " D " to effect spacing between two consecutive words and the typewheel is provided for this purpose with a notch 75. In another embodiment (in Fig. 8, not shown) spacing between words is assisted by a lever whose one end presses under the forks 15 of selector levers 16 and another end engages the arm 31 to prevent angular displacement of the type-wheel 30. Platen impression arrangements.-To effect impression of a type character on the paper 82, Fig. 3, carried by the platen 76, the platen is displaced in a radial direction away from the type-wheel (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown), by a camoperated link 86 and then released under spring action into contact with the type-wheel. Letter-spacing and carriage-return mechanism; type carriages.-A cam 45, Fig. 3, through follower 46 and link 47 displaces a pawl 51 to impart anticlockwise rotation to a pawl 52 fast with a cam 54, whereby the cam displaces through the intermediary of a pin 62, a lever 61, which in turn moves the type-wheel 30 axially one letter-space in the direction " D." When the pin 62 arrives at an abrupt edge 67 of cam 54 it follows quickly along a camming surface 68 under the action of a spring 61<SP>1</SP> and the lever 61 returns the type-wheel quickly to the beginning of a new line. A pawl 57 prevents the ratchetwheel from turning in the opposite direction. Types, dies and printing surfaces.-The typewheel 30, Fig. 3, which is slidably mounted on the shaft 20 for rotatable movement therewith, is provided on its periphery with 31 alphanumerical characters and the alphabetic characters o, b, I, q and s are shaped in such a way that they may additionally be used in typing of numbers 0, 6, 1, 9 and 5, respectively. The periphery is also provided with a notch 75 for spacing between consecutive words.
