Abstract
1,015,095. Automatic gain control. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Jan. 25, 1963 [Jan. 31, 1962], No. 3253/63. Heading H3T. A selective amplifier gain control circuit comprises a tuned circuit 3, 4 connected to one end of a variable attenuator, which comprises a series diode 5 and a shunt diode 6 which is in series with a resistor 15 of a value substantially. equal to the value of the terminating impedance 14 of the attenuator at the other end, the attenuation being variable without varying the impedance presented to the tuned circuit by control potentials applied to the diodes. In the Figure impedance 14 is that of the input of an amplifier stage and diodes 5, 6 are biased by resistor chain 9, 10, 11. With a small control voltage, diode 5 conducts and diode 6 is blocked, so that the impedance 14 is presented to the tuned circuit. A large control voltage saturates transistor 13 and causes diode 5 to become high impedance and diode 6 to present impedance 15 to the tuned circuit. The circuit may be used in the reverse direction in which case impedance 14 is that of the signal source, e.g. an amplifier or a cable. Greater sensitivity may be obtained by connecting the right-hand side of resistor 11 to a resistor in the collector circuit of 13.
