Abstract

1,013,990. Fittings for fluorescent lamps. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 4, 1964 [Aug. 21, 1963], No. 33145/63. Heading F4R. A lighting fitting comprises an enclosure part at least of which is light transmitting, means for supporting one or more tubular fluorescent lamps within the enclosure and openings in the wall of the enclosure so positioned that when the lamp is energized air is drawn into the enclosure by convection and is directed over a selected portion of the surface of the/or each lamp so as to control the temperature of that portion to maintain the mercury vapour pressure in the lamp at approximately the optimum temperature. In one form, two lamps 1, 2 are mounted side by side on a support member 3 and covered by a light-transmitting enclosure 4 provided with openings 5 adjacent each lamp and having its ends spaced from the support member 3 to facilitate the flow of air. If desired, short tubes may be fitted inside the cover to direct the air on to the lamps. The openings may be provided with thermostatically controlled flaps to vary the flow of air in accordance with ambient conditions. In a modification, the cover comprises a system of louvres, the gaps between which are closed except for selected ones to serve as ventilation openings.
