Abstract

1,013,800. Temperature alarms. PYRENE CO. Ltd. Dec. 17, 1963 [Dec. 17, 1962], No. 47561/62. Heading G4N. [Also in Divisions G1 and N1] Apparatus for detecting a fire comprises two wires forming the elements of a thermocouple, located in a cable whose dielectric is a powder having a high resistivity at low temperatures and a low resistivity at high temperatures, whereby a raised temperature anywhere along the cable forms a closed hot junction for the two wires, and a temperature-indicative voltage is developed between adjacent cold points of the two wires. The cable may be open at each end or formed into a closed loop (Fig. 1), the output signal being indicated on a meter or fed to a detector 9 where it operates an alarm at a predetermined temperature. The two conductors 4, 5 may be checked for continuity using A.C. isolated from the normal alarm circuit (Fig. 5, not shown) or D.C. of the opposite polarity (Fig. 3, not shown). The thermocouple wires may be chromel and alumel, and the dielectric 6 may be powdered magnesium oxide and sodium chloride or another alkali-metal halide. In a modification, an external stainless steel sheath 3 forms one element and a single alumel or chromel wire forms the other element of the thermocouple.
