Abstract

1,013,728. Valves. STANDARD-THOMSON CORPORATION. Aug. 18, 1964, No. 33669/64. Heading F2V. A thermally actuated valve comprises a support structure 24 carrying a valve seat 16, a bellows 30 of which one open end forms a closure which is urged by resilience of the bellows or a spring in a direction to engage the seat, the other end of the bellows being closed and supported at a fixed distance from the seat, and a thermal element 36 on the upstream side of the seat exposed to the fluid and acting directly on the closure to open the valve on rise of temperature. The element is of the type comprising relatively movable capsule and pin members enclosing between them a temperature responsive flowable material. In another embodiment, the valve member is on the upstream side of the seat whilst the pin 40 is fixed to the support structure and the capsule 38 is movable with the valve member. In a modification, a turned-in end of the bellows itself forms the closure part. In a further embodiment, Fig. 10 (not shown), the capsule, which moves with the closure member, is slidably engaged in a seal carried by the fixed end of the bellows, a part of the capsule which protrudes through this seal being in contact with the fluid on the upstream side. The diameter of the bellows may be varied in relation to the closure to over- or under-balance the valve with respect to fluid pressures.
