Abstract

1,013,706. Extrusion dies. BRITISHAMERICAN TOBACCO CO. Ltd. Sept. 24, 1964 [Oct. 4, 1963], No. 39244/63. Headings B5A and B5B. A die-head for extrusion of filaments or films of a plastic material comprises a chamber for receiving material to be extruded, and a nozzle holder containing a symmetrical-nozzle assembly, the nozzle holder being rotatable relative to the chamber so that the direction of the nozzle or nozzles in relation to the direction of flow of the material being extruded can be reversed for the purpose of clearing blockages from the nozzle or nozzles. By a symmetricalnozzle assembly is meant one having nozzle orifices or slots symmetrically placed in relation to the axis of rotation of the holder. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) a nozzle-holder 1 comprises a cylindrical metal bar having a slot 2 across which is located a partition 3 provided with nozzles 4. The partition may be integral with the holder 1 or fixed thereto by e.g. welding. Holder 1 is rotatable by tommy bars 8 relative to a chamber 5 into which a pressure element, e.g. a screw, forces material through opening 6. Slot 2 is arranged to coincide with a similar slot 7 in chamber 5, in two diametrically opposite positions. Slot 10, in the bottom of block 9, in which chamber 5 is formed, is of the same shape as slot 2 and forms an outlet for the extruded filaments. A heater plate 14 containing elements 15 is fixed to the back of block 9. Holes 17, 18 and 19 serve to introduce pressure and temperature measuring and controlling devices. In use, when a blockage on the nozzles occurs, the nozzle-holder 1 is rotated through 180 degrees so that flow of material through the nozzles is reversed. In a further embodiment, the nozzles are formed in a separate nozzle plate which is clamped to partition 3, a wide slot then being provided in the partition. A slot (Fig. 3) or series of slots may be provided instead of round nozzles for the extrusion of flat films. The apparatus may be used for extrusion of reconstituted tobacco compositions.
