Abstract

1,013,613. Lathes. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO. Ltd. Dec. 6, 1963 [Dec. 6, 1962], No. 46067/62. Heading B3T. [Also in Division F2] An automatic machine-tool comprises a toolslide 10 controlled by a rotatable cam-drum 7 which effects a fast approach, feed stroke, fast return and, if required, a dwell, part of the camtrack on the drum 7 being formed by the edge of a flexible metal strip 13 retained on the drum in cylindrical formation and adjustable to alter its slope. The drum is mounted on a shaft 6 driven, through a chain 3 and sprockets 4, 5, by a bevel gear 1 on a multi-spindle lathe. An hydraulic servo-mechanism 11, controlled by the cam-drum through a lever 9, operates the tool-slide 10, the lever being spring-pressed against the drum. Fig. 5 is a developed view of the drum 7 with its outer sleeve 23 removed, and shows a strip 12 controlling the approach and a strip 13 for the feed, the strips being adjustable about pivots 14, 15 by a pin 17 passing through a hole in the strip 13 and a slot 16 in strip 12. The pin is carried by a ring 18, Fig. 3, on a sleeve 19 which has studs 20 engaging screw threads in the core 21 of the drum and a scale 26 facilitating angular adjustment of the sleeve 19 and thus axial movement of the pin 17. More than one pair of strips 12, 13 may be provided and the pairs may be adjustable independently or together.
