Impression surfaces and overlays; intagtio-plate printing.-Relates to rotary machines for printing from thin intaglio plates, such as are described in Specification 10550/15, 13151/15, and 100,616, and consists in providing the impression cylinder with depressions or the like opposite the gaps or joints between the ends of the printing-plates on the plate cylinder, so as to remove or reduce the printing-pressure at these points to prevent soiling by the ink that may accumulate in the gaps. As shown in Fig. 1, the impression cylinder is formed with depressions D opposite the gaps C between the plates B on the cylinder A. The paper being printed is shown at F, and an endless blanket at E. The depressions are shorter than the width of the paper F, so that there may be feeding contact between the cylinders at each end; and the sides of the depressions are preferably curved or formed to prevent sudden re-engagement of the impression surface. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, an overlay C of paper, india-rubber, cloth, pasteboard, &c. is placed on the cylinder D to increase the diameter of the impression surface. The thickness of this sheet C in different parts may be varied to increase or decrease the printing-pressure at the desired points. In this case, running or bearer rings H are also provided to make pressure contact with the ends of the plate cylinder A.
