Abstract
Spheres of inorganic material such as glass, slag or ores are formed by heating particles of the material to a temperature above softening point while they are in contact with the heated surface of a heat - transfer medium which is not wetted by the material whereby the particles become substantially spheroidal, and then allowing them to pass into a cooling zone. In the pre ferred form of apparatus, the particles fall on to a rotating graphite cylinder 10 heated internally by a burner 11 and externally by a burner 11a . In a modification, the graphite surface is in the form of a sloping flat plate heated by electricity. According to a further modification, molten glass flows from a tank 30 into a heated pear-shaped graphite crucible 32, the narrow opening of which is closed by a stopper 34 adjustable to permit the glass to emerge and form droplets which roll down the walls of the passage 33 before falling into the cooling space 39. Thin flexibl bands 38 of copper are mounted in the space 39 to assist in cooling the spheres, or the space can be filled with an atmosphere of powdered graphite. <PICT:1013414/C1/1> <PICT:1013414/C1/2>
