Bromomethanes are produced by subjecting methane to the action of bromine and/or hydrogen bromide in the presence of chlorine and heat or actinic radiation, the molecular ratio of chlorine to bromine and/or hydrogen bromide being 1-1.35. Undesired bromomethanes may be recycled. Chloromethanes and bromochloromethanes are also obtained.
