Abstract

[Also in Division F1] A submersible contrifugal pump P driven by an electric motor M comprises an upper electrode U and a lower electrode L which are adapted to be electrically connected to an earth by conduction through water in which the pump is immersed. The electrodes are attached to the motor casing, and the casing may form the earth E, the electrodes being insulated from it. If, however, the casing is of a poor conductor, such as synthetic resin, the earth E is formed by additional electrodes adjacent the electrodes U and L. When the water level reaches the upper electrode U, it forms a conductive path between this electrode and the earth E, whereby a relay RG, is energized from the power supply lead 11 through a transformer T and a rectifier R. A contact S 1 on this relay then closes to energize a further relay RC 2 . Contact S 2 on the latter relay closes to energize the motor M and another contact S 2 <SP>1</SP> connects the electrode L in parallel with the electrode U. The motor M consequently continues running until the water level has fallen below the lower electrode L, whereupon the relays and the motor are de-energized, and operation is not resumed until the water level again reaches the upper electrode U.
