In an electrically driven submersible pump in which the motor chamber 12 and the pump chamber 14 are separated by an oil-filled chamber 18 and the pump shaft 19 is sealed where it extends through the chamber 12 and through the chamber 14 by seals 20 and 21 respectively, leakage of liquid into the chambers 18 and 12 is detected by electrodes 23 and 24 respectively which are connected to a leakage indicator device, e.g. a lamp 28 and to one side 29 of a voltage supply 30. The electrodes 23 and 26 are located near the bottoms of the chambers 18 and 12 respectively and are insulated from the chamber walls. The other side 31 of the supply 30 is connected to the pump casing 11. In operation, when sufficient water leaks into the chamber 18 or the chamber 12 to complete the electrical circuit through the electrode 23 or 26 respectively, the warning lamp 28 is lit. In a modification, the electrodes are connected in a circuit responsive to alterations of capacitance produced by changes in the dielectric between the electrode and the casing wall when seal leakage occurs.
