Abstract

Solid concentrates for addition to drinking water for use in the treatment on prevention of histomoniasis comprise an admixture of a nitroimidazole of the general formula: <FORM:1013221/A5-A6/1> wherein one of X and Y represents a nitro group and the other a hydrogen atom and R1 and R2 are the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, the sum of the carbon atoms in R1 and R2 not exceeding four, together with a solid, water-soluble pharmacologically acceptable acid salt, or, a solid, water-soluble inorganic acid addition salt of a nitroimidazole of the above general formula together with a solid, pharmacologically acceptable base which is preferably a nitroimidazole base of the general formula but may be any non-toxic base e.g. rodium or potassium carbonate. Suitable acid salts are those derived from polybasic acids e.g. potassium dihydrogenphosphate. The relative amounts of the specified ingredients may be such that, when the composition (which may also comprise a neutral carrier) is dissolved in water, the pH of the aqueous composition is within the range 4.5-7.5.
