Abstract

1,013,218. Sawing. F. RUEDIGER. Dec. 12, 1962 [April 13, 1962; Oct. 10, 1962], No. 46854/62. Heading B5L. Apparatus for cutting and trimming books 5, Fig. 1, or the like comprises a conveyer 7 for delivering the books to a saw 2, and retaining means 9 which resiliently urge the books against the conveyer through at least a substantial part of the movement of the books. The books, which may be in double form, are initially stored in a magazine 4 and fed singly by a feeding device 6 on to the conveyer 7 of the clamping device. The conveyer has abutments 7a which engage the books, and may act in place of the device 6 to remove the books from the magazine to convey them between guides to the saw 2, the books being clamped against the conveyer by belt or chain 9 which has sliding runners or rollers 10 and is resiliently mounted so as to be adaptable to the thickness of the books. The saw 2 separates the double books into single books 5b which pass down a shoot 11 on to a stacking magazine 12. In another arrangement, the double books 5, Fig. 4, are delivered from a feeding station Z to a trimming station I whereat saws 2 trim the ends of the books before they are passed to a separating saw 2 at a station II. The separated books then pass grinding wheels 2a at a station Ia so that the trimmed edges of the books are smoothed. After trimming the books are conveyed past a saw 2 at a station III and a grinding wheel 2a at a station IIIa for the cutting and smoothing of the longitudinal edges of the books. Finally, the separated books are fed past grinding wheels 2a at stations IIa, IIb for smoothing the edges produced by the saw 2 at station II.
