A face bow for establishing the relationship between the orbital plane and the occlusal plane is associated with an articulator, to which it can be attached to serve as a guide for correct adjustment. The face bow comprises two arms 11, Fig. 2, pivoted at 20 to a cross bar 12 and locked in position by a clamping screw 14. At their rear ends these arms carry spherical tips 13 for engagement with the tragi of the patients ears, see Fig. 1 while the cross bar carries a member 15 for engaging the nasion N. A bite plate 19 is carried on a rod 29 adjustably attached by a clamp 18 to a further rod 25 secured to the cross bar 12 and, in use, the tips 13, bite plate 19 and guide 15 are adjusted and clamped in position. It is known that the condyle pivots C are approximately a quarter of an inch in front of the points of contact of the tips 13 and a round-headed screw 17 is provided which will be tangential to the orbital plane. These facts are made use of in setting up the face bow on the articulator to which it is attached by engaging the tips 13 with blocks 39, Fig. 3 not shown, which are pivoted to the base on pillars 39 mounted on an upright support 44. The post 25 rests on a block 35, on the base 41, and the mounting plate 36 is lowered to rest on the head 27 of the screw 17 so that it is then known to lie in the orbital plate P. Plaster 62 may then be filled in between the adjustable carrier 60 and the model 37, the latter having been previously positioned accurately on the bite plate 19.
