Abstract

1,012,715. Type-making machines. LANSTON INDUSTRIES Inc. March 27, 1962 [March 29, 1961], No. 11748/62. Heading B6W. Metal pots and pumps.-Downward movement of the pump plunger 80, Figs. 1 and 4, forces metal from the pot 14 through a passage 64 to a nozzle 70 and thence to the mould 16. The pump body 50 is movable vertically to bring the nozzle into and out of contact with the mould. The movements are controlled from a piston 98 through a linkage mechanism 22 comprising arms 108, 116 actuating the plunger 80 and body 50, respectively, in such a way that an initial downward movement of the plunger takes place before the engagement of the nozzle with the mould to expel air A in the nozzle, the body 50 is then raised, and a further downward movement of the plunger forces metal into the mould, rebound of the nozzle being counteracted by a damping plunger 72. The piston 98 is actuated by a two-way valve mechanism 24, Figs. 2 and 7, comprising a rod 150 spring-urged into the left-hand position to actuate the pump and hold in inoperative position to urge the piston 98 downwards by an arm 198 engaging a collar 204, the arm being cyclically oscillated to release the valve by the oscillation of a shaft 184 under the control of a cyclically moving part of the casting-machine. In normal operation, a latch 216 is held in inoperative position by a lever 222. On receipt of a justification signal, completion of the effect of which requires two machine cycles, or of a line-cancellation signal, the lever 222 releases the latch 216 to prevent operation of the valve and the pump. A further arrangement of parts 246, 234, 240, 230 and the pivoting of the, lever 222 about a vertical axis (Fig. 7 being a plan view), results in the latch 216 not being released during the cycle following the justification signal and also delays release of the latch for one cycle to allow casting of the last character before the justification signal. The pot 14 together with the pump assembly, can be pivoted to inoperative position outside the machine frame about a pivot shaft 34, Figs. 1 and 2, and can be adjusted vertically by means of a handle 48, through helical gears 36, 44. Moulds.-The mould cooling system is controlled, so as to avoid excessive cooling during the periods when the pump operation is prevented, by a solenoid controlled by a microswitch actuated by an extension of the latch 216 beyond its pivot 214.
