Abstract

The invention comprises quaternary compounds having cations of formula <FORM:1012622/C2/1> wherein R1 is an alkyl group, R2 is a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aryl, aralkyl or heterocyclyl aryl radical, optionally substituted, the group -OR2 having a - or b -configuration, R3 is a cycloaliphatic radical having 5 to 7 carbon atoms, optionally substituted by an alkyl group, R4 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and R5 is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy, alkoxy or acyloxy group, and their preparation by quaternization of the corresponding tertiary bases in which the nitrogen atom carries the substituent R1 only, followed, if necessary and desired, by acylation of compounds wherein R2 is a hydrogen atom, or by removal of an acyl group used to protect a hydroxy group in R2. Tropeine starting materials (R2=acyl) are prepared by acylation of corresponding compounds in which R2=H. The compounds of the invention have axonal blocking and hypotensive activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier, for example in forms suitable for oral or parenteral administration, such as tablets and injectable solutions.
