Abstract

A process for improving the colour of an alkylarylsulphonic acid which has been obtained by sulphonation of an alkylarylhydrocarbon and in which the alkyl chain contains from 6 to 18 carbon atoms, comprises adding to the sulphonic acid first water in an amount of from 5 to 20% by weight with respect to the weight of sulphonic acid, and thereafter an alkaline perborate in an amount of from 0.1 to 5% by weight with respect to the weight of sulphonic acid. Preferred perborates are NaBO3.5H2O, NaBO3.4H2O, KBO3.5H2O and NH4BO3.5H2O. The additions are preferably made at 20-60 DEG C. The stabilized products may be converted to alkali or organic base salts.
