Abstract

1,012,425. Induction systems; silencers. ALFA ROMEO S.p.A. April 1, 1964, No. 13504/64. Heading F1B. An induction manifold comprises a cylindrical entry chamber 6 from which lead tangentially the tuned individual induction pipes 9 leading to the cylinders. The flanges 9 encircling the chamber 6 and the spaces 10 therebetween being enclosed to form resonant silencing chambers connected to chamber 6 by openings 11. The manifold is built up of separate circular elements 4 corresponding in number to the engine cylinders and each comprising a flange 9 and chamber 10, the elements 4 being held together by a bolt 2 securing end plates 1, 3, in position. In Figs. 1 and 3 a cylindrical filter 5 is arranged in contact with one side of the chamber 6 to prevent rotary swirl about the axis of chamber 6 building up. In a modification, Fig. 3, the filter is coaxial and swirl is prevented by a baffle 16 which may alternatively be situated inside the filter. The filter may be omitted and a baffle situated adjacent the parts 8.
