In a duplicating or like printing machine which is coupled by the operator to a power drive to effect one complete printing operation, a mechanism is provided on the sheet-feed table of the machine to print, e.g. batch or serial numbers, on the edges of the sheets and is operated from the power drive prior to the instant when a manually-inserted sheet is gripped and fed into the machine. As shown, the additional printing mechanism comprises hand-set type-wheels 36 carried by the hinged lid 35, Fig. 6, of a casing 33, the base 34 of which is fixed to the feed-table 14 and has an edge 34a constituting a side-lay for the sheets. A spring acting on the lid 35 normally holds the type-wheels out of contact with the sheet, and printing is effected by the action of cam 28, Fig. 5, on a lever 42 engaging a pin 43 on a slide 44 mounted on the lid. The slide 44 can be moved to take the pin 43 out of engagement with the lever 42 and thus render the typewheels 36 inoperative. A shaft 23 carrying the cam 28 is coupled by a one-revolution clutch to a constantly-rotating drive-shaft when a foot pedal 15, Fig. 3, is operated, the shaft 23 making one revolution in a time which is short compared with that required for a cycle of the machine. After the edge of the sheet has been printed, a roller 30 on a disc 29 fixed to the shaft 23 engages a lever 31 which operates the normal machinecontrol lever 17 so as to initiate a cycle of the machine. Ink-ribbon mechanism.-The type-wheels 36 print through an ink-ribbon 38, Figs. 4, 6, which extends from a reel 39 over guides 40 to a reel 41. Both reels are free on a shaft 48 and each carries a ratchet-wheel 49 associated with a pawl lever 50. The two pawl levers 50 are reciprocated by a lever 51, Fig. 5, operated from a cam 27 on the shaft 23 prior to a printing operation, and one or the other of the levers 50 is depressed so as to hold it out of engagement with its ratchet-wheel, by means of a rocker 53 operated by a part 54.
