Abstract

1,012,166. Winding. W. H. W. SCHULLER. Nov 20, 1961 [Nov 25, 1960], No. 40666/60. Heading D1D. A method of continuously winding filament or strands of glass fibres comprises moving a full bobbin rotating at normal winding speed away from its winding position and into an unloading position, moving an empty bobbin rotating at normal winding speed away from an unloading position and towards the winding position, halting the empty bobbin after it has passed the winding position so that the emempty bobbin crosses the path of the filament being wound, decreasing the rotational speed of the full bobbin so that the length of filament between the full and empty bobbins is broken, and moving the empty bobbin into the winding position. As shown, bobbin 10 in the winding position and bobbin 12 in the bobbin exchanging position, are mounted in a drum 20 rotatable about its axis by a motor 22 and the bobbins are drivable by motors 13, 14. Before a wind begins the filament 1 passes over a traverse 9, about the bobbin 10 and on toapre-winding drum 11 until the desired thickness of filament is obtained; the wind on bobbin 10 is then begun. When the bobbin 10 is full the drum 20 is rotated in direction A through approximately ¥ of a revolution so that the yarn becomes partially wrapped about empty bobbin 12 rotation of which begins simultaneously with the rotation of durm 20; at the same time bobbin 10 is slowed and subsequently the filament between the bobbins breaks so that winding continues on bobbin 12. Drum 20 is then rotated through “ revolution in direction B to bring bobbin 12 into the position of bobbin 10 shown in Fig 3. Full bobbin 10 is then replaces by an empty one. To ensure that filament of varying thickness is not wound on to the package the traverse 9 is displaced at the beginning of winding and at changover of bobbins so that the filament then delivered is would on to a special end portion of the bobbin from which it may be removed when the bobbin is doffed. Each bobbin may be provided with its own guide which may be cleared when the associated bobbin is in the doffing position. In another embodiment the pair of bobbins is moved along straight paths which intersect at right angles to achieve the same effects as above. In this case the movement of the bobbins may be controlled by hand or mechanically or it may be time-controlled or controlled by movement of the filament.
