Abstract

1,011,898. Seat hinges. ROCKWELL-STANDARD CORPORATION. Aug. 12, 1963, No. 31707/63. Heading E2F. [Also in Division A4] Mechanism providing positional adjustment between the side rail 12 of an automobile seat back and a stationary seat frame member 13 on which the seat back is pivoted comprises a clutch cam 14 fixed to said member 13, a lock and release ring 31 urged into a locking position by a spring 46 engaging a shoulder 47 on one of three flanges 41 on the inner periphery of said ring, and a bearing ring 24 mounted on a pivot bolt 26 and to which the side rail 12 is attached, the lock ring being operated by a handle 39 to allow relative movement between the seat back and stationary frame member and to lock them again. Cam 14 has three wedge recesses 17 each defined by an inclined cam face 18 having a chordal straight section 19 and a curved section 21, rollers 22 in pockets 44 between the flanges 41 being wedged in the recesses against the inner periphery 23 of the ring 24 by the spring 46 to lock the seat back in a new position. A spring 50 attached at 51 to the rail 12 and on to a lip 52 integral with the ring 31 exerts a pull thereupon over-riding spring 46 when the back rest is forcibly rotated in an anticlockwise direction, and on release of the back rest, restores it to its original position. In a modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), a coiled spring mounted on a plate on the end of side rail 12 biases the ring 31 towards the release position, but is held by a stop until the seat back is tipped forwardly. On return of the seat the coiled spring counter acts spring 46 until a stop releases the ring for locking by said spring 46 thus relocking the seat back.
