Abstract
1,011,451. Liquid-ring pumps. I. C. JENNINGS. Nov. 20, 1963 [Nov. 27, 1962], No. 45858/63. Heading F1C. A liquid-ring pump has means for bleeding off some of the sealing liquid when operating below its designed vacuum capability, such as during starting. This reduces surging and horsepower requirements of the pump when operating under such conditions. In a pump for moderate to high vacuums, for example corresponding to more than twenty inches of mercury, gas enters through inlets 36 and ports 40 in stationary members 38, and leaves through ports 42 and chambers 44 each having three outlets 52, one of which (not shown) extends vertically downwardly. Make-up sealing liquid supplied through a conduit (not shown) keeps the pump cool. When the pump is operated at relatively low vacuum conditions or during starting, the higher pressure of the sealing liquid therein causes valves 58 in conduits 56 to open to release sealing liquid from annular chambers 54 through conduits 60 each communicating with one of the outlets 52. Alternatively, the valves 58 may be omitted and each conduit may extend directly to the bottom of a gas-liquid separating tank connected at the top to the pump outlet, the flow of sealing liquid to and from the pump through the conduit being controlled by the pressure of the sealing liquid in the pump and the liquid head in the separating tank. In both embodiments the unused outlets 52 are closed by baffle plates (not shown). A chamber 46, communicating with the interior of the pump through an aperture 50, is capped by cover plates 48 and is vented through conduits or valves (not shown) when unloading or drainage of the pump is desired.
