Abstract
1,067,395. Compressors. LENNOX INDUSTRIES Inc. March 1, 1965 [Oct.19, 1964], No. 8662/65. Heading F1N. [Also in Division G3] In a hermetically sealed refrigerant compressor unit (10), Fig. 1 (not shown), in which the compressor (18) and its driving motor (44) are mounted in an inner shell (50, 20, 26) itself mounted in a sealed outer shell (12, 13), an unloading device (86) is disposed within the outer shell and is operable to direct some or all the compressor output to the space between the inner and outer shells. The unloading device (86) is controlled by a pilot valve (88) operated by a thermostat or by suction pressure. In the inoperative position of the pilot valve (88) a conduit (93) connected to the unloading device (86) is subjected to the discharge pressure communicated thereto through the valve (88) and a conduit (92) leading to the discharge manifold (78). The discharge pressure in the conduit (93) urges a valve member (109), Fig.3, (not shown) into engagement with a seat (111) whereby the gas discharged from the cylinder (30C) passes through a passageway (77) and conduits (104, 108) to an annular muffle chamber (78a) (shown developed in Fig.3) which communicates through an opening (98) with the discharge manifold (78) which has an outlet (102). Operation of the pilot valve (88) causes connection of the conduit (93) to suction pressure in the space between the inner and outer shells whereby the valve member (109) moves away from the seat (111) and the gas discharged from the cylinder (30C) passes through the conduit (104) and an outlet (106) to be returned to the suction space between the inner and outer shells. The compressor (18) has four radially disposed cylinders, two of which (30A, 30C) are provided with unloading devices (86), (86') and hence one quarter or one half of the compressor output may be unloaded. Gas enters the outer shell through an inlet (82) and flows through apertures in a mounting flange (27) before entering the inner shell through an aperture (51) to cool the motor (44) and pass to openings (84) in communication with the cylinder suction valves.
