Abstract

1,011,271. Forced flow steam boilers. MITCHELL ENGINEERING Ltd., H. D. WATSON, and E. C. RICHARDSON. Jan. 18, 1963 [Feb. 19, 1962], No. 6287/62. Heading F4A. A boiler comprises a cylindrical furnace casing on a vertical axis with air inlet 14 and fuel burner 20 at its lower end and a chimney 15 at its upper end, all being coaxial with the casing, and a water tube arrangement comprising at least three helically wound tube coils 25 . . . 27 spaced radially apart and arranged coaxially within the casing and connected in flow series. The two innermost helices 25, 26 have their tube convolutions in contact over a major part of their lengths to provide a sinuous combustion gas path upwardly from the air inlet through space 44, downwardly between the innermost helices 25, 26 and upwardly between the helices 26, 27 to the chimney. The air inlet is fed from a forced draught fan 17 through ducts 19, 16, the air cooling the double furnace walls 13 en route. The burner is supplied with separate gaseous and liquid fuels through pipes 21, 22. Water is fed into the upper end of the outer helix 27 by pump 29 through header 28 and passes serially into the lower ends of helices 26, 25 and into tube 39 lining the roof. This roof contains a central explosion door 35. A steam separator 41 having a steam outlet 42 controlled on a valve 43 is provided. The innermost helix may have longitudinally spaced convolutions at its upper end, and the next helix, spaced convolutions at its lower end, whilst the outermost helix may have convolutions in contact over its entire length and may be in contact with the outer casing. The boiler is supported on pillars and subsidiary equipment is positioned on the base either beneath or to one side of the boiler, and is provided with skid members along its sides on which it may rest during transportation as a single unit. In a modification the outermost helix may have spaced convolutions over a major part of its length and be spaced away from the outer wall. In a further modification, steam superheating tubes may be positioned in the combustion gas path and be connected to the steam separator, whilst there may be a plurality of water heating coils adjacent to or replacing the outermost helix.
