Abstract

1,011,151. Spray carburetters. BENDIX CORPORATION. July 9, 1962 [July 7, 1961], No. 26305/62. Heading FIB. In a constant suction type carburetter with a metering needle 74 operated by a suction actuated piston 56, controlling a fuel orifice situated in a ridge 19, enrichment of the mixture at starting or full throttle is obtained by a shaft 78 which restricts the air flow beneath the piston. The shaft 78 has a segmental crosssection 79 which normally forms part of the sloping side 21 of the ridge 19. The minimum air flow cross-section is determined by projections 77 on the piston 56 contacting the ridge 19. Rotation of the shaft 78 at starting first closes the air passage beneath the piston 56 and then lifts the piston slightly to increase the fuel flow through the orifice, providing a rich starting mixture. The shaft 78 may be operated by linkage connected to the throttle valve operating linkage; alternatively it may be controlled conjointly by a bimetallic strip and suction operated piston or engine speed responsive solenoid. In Fig. 8 the shaft 278 controlling the choke 78 is urged by a spring 289 towards its enriching position and is held in its normal position during normal running by a suction actuated piston 282. At full throttle, the suction decreases and the spring 289 moves the shaft to its enriching position in which it partially restricts the air passage.
