Abstract

1,011,071. Two-part couplings. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Feb. 9, 1962 [Jan. 3, 1961], No. 188/61. Heading H2E. In a connector having its contacts arranged in one or more lines at uniform modular distances apart, the contacts are carried by a number of blocks assembled end to end to form the composite connector, the sum of the distances from each end surface of a block to the centre of the nearest contact therein being equal to or not more than the modular distance. In one embodiment designed for a socket connector for a printed circuit panel the blocks are formed as shown in Fig. 2a. The pairs of flexible strip contacts 17 (Fig. 4), which are as described in Specification 1,005,705, are separated by barrier walls 5 in the blocks. The blocks are held together by cover strips 9 which dovetail with the projections 8 on the blocks. End members 11, 12 (Fig. 1, not shown), are provided having bores for stress holding the assembly to a support and one end member 12 has an integral guide for a printed circuitboard. Dummy contacts may be arranged asymmetrically in the connector to ensure correct insertion of the board. The soldering tags 18 may be retained by stagging or may be arranged to emerge side-by-side (Fig. 5, not shown), being offset for neighbouring pairs of contacts. They may be bent to retain them in phase and may be secured together. In another embodiment (Fig. 6), a connector pin 24 fits in divided connector blocks 25, 26 held together by strips 30, 31. The soldering tags may project through block 26 or as an alternative (Fig. 7, not shown), may project at rightangles from pin 24 through strip 31. The end barrier walls of the blocks may be half thickness, or there may be a full thickness barrier wall at one end and more at the other, or alternatively, no barrier walls may be provided, in which case separate barrier members are interposed between adjacent blocks. The method of assembly is described in detail (Figs. 10-13, not shown).
