Abstract

Keratin containing substances especially human hair, and fur are dyed by treating the keratin containing substance with a reagent capable of forming a coloured complex with a metal applied to the substance as a solution. The reagent applied reacts with the cystine material in the keratin to make available reactive sites on the keratin, with which the metal may form a complex on subsequent application. After formation of the metal complex a further treatment may be carried out to change the shade obtained. Alternatively compounds which do not react with the keratin but merely coat it may be used thus producing a thin coating on the hair or keratin which is then treated with a metal salt solution, the coloured metal compound being bound to the keratin by said coating. A preferred pretreatment before treating with the metal is alkaline hydrogen peroxide bleaching, also ammonium thioglycolate, after treatments include the use of an amidoxime of cyanoethye cellulose polymers and thioamide derivatures such as dithooxmide. Many metals are specified and there are preferably applied to the keratin from aqueous solution especially ammoniacal solutions.
