Abstract
1,010,686. Releasable fastenings. R. J. EMERY. July 29, 1964 [May 11, 1964], No. 19462/64. Heading E2A. A jamming cleat has a groove opening out of one side and extending over the whole length of the cleat the groove having opposed internal faces which converge towards the bottom of the groove and ridges on each face, the ridges on both faces being inclined to the base of the groove upwardly from one end of the groove. In Figs. 1 and 2 the cleat is of truncated conical form and is intended for use as a knob for the pull cord of for example an electric light switch. The ridges are inclined at an angle of 45 degrees to the axis 16 of the cleat and as shown each ridge on one face of the groove is aligned with a ridge on the opposite face of the groove. In a modification, however, the ridges on opposite faces are staggered relative to each other. The angle in either form can be varied from 45 degrees. As shown also the ridges are straight but in a modification they can be curved. In another modification they can have one or more angles in their length. In cross-section the ridges are triangular or arcuate. In another construction, Fig. 10, the cleat is basically a rectilinear block with a single groove having ridges of any of the forms described above. The block is provided with two lugs haying bores 20 so that the cleat can swivel about a bar rigidly fixed to a supporting structure. In another construction a plurality of parallel grooves are provided; each groove being provided with any of the forms of ridges described above and being intended to be screwed to a support. Various polygonal blocks each having a plurality of parallel slots in two or more faces are disclosed. In another construction, the cleat is made in three parts which are bolted together. The groove or grooves of any form instead of being of the shape with inclined walls shown can be modified so that near its bottom the walls are parallel.
