Selvedge control mechanism is provided in a flat bed machine having needle selecting mechanism as described in the parent Specification, which comprises a pair of superposed metal tapes 26, 27 each having a longitudinally disposed slot 28 arranged so that the slots of the respective tapes overlap one another to present a common slot. The tapes are arranged between the selector drum 10 and the needle selector members 12 so that when the drum is raised the fingers 14 of the members 12 normally project through the slot and engages the surface of the drum or apertures therein. The tapes are attached to the nuts of the screw fashioning mechanism and as fashioning proceeds they are accordingly moved relative to each other with the result that the effective slot of the two superposed tapes is varied in length. The fingers 14 which then engage the tape when the drum 10 is raised therefore fail to be selected by the drum and cause the corresponding members 12 to render their associated needles inoperative. The drum 10 is raised by toggle mechanism 15 operated from a shaft 19 which simultaneously operates a catch bar 20 to release the previously selected members 12 so that they can be reselected. The tapes may be in the form of endless bands or where a single control division is provided they may comprise bands which are secured to the fashioning screw mechanism and extend throughout all the knitting divisions of the machine, being held taut by weights secured at their ends.
