Abstract

<PICT:1010134/C4-C5/1> An illuminated dial comprises a layer of electroluminescent material 1 between a continuous electrode 3 on a backing plate 4 and wire electrodes 2 bent to the shape of indicia, the e.l. layer 1 glowing in use over a width greater than the diameter of the wire 2 which appears dark. Where the wires are not required to be lit up, e.g. lead-in wires, they may be circulated to block optically the emitted light. Connection to the electrode 3 may be capacitative from a further electrode 6 below the device, and the electroluminescent cell may comprise a capacitor in the oscillator circuit of a heterodyne receiver. A movable pointer may be seen as a dark line interrupting a continuous illuminated line.
