Abstract

1,010,001. Automatic character reading. COMPAGNIE DES MACHINES BULL. June 11, 1963 [June 19, 1962], No. 23250/63. Addition to 951014. Heading G4R. In a character recognition system as described in the parent Specification a comparator unit for determining the highest integration signal obtained during a scanning sub-cycle consists in an amplifier A10, Fig. 1, and a feed-back loop consisting of a Zener diode DZ. The action of the amplifier and diode is to keep the potential of the input constant by balancing the currents from terminals B11 and B12 with a feed-back current. The applied voltages e1 and e2 are of opposite values and the potential across the diode DZ is zero or its critical voltage depending upon the direction of current flow in the diode. The two state output therefore indicates that e1 or e2 is the larger. A series of eight such circuits 401-408, Fig. 2 receive respectively the four true voltages Sh, Sv, Sd1 and Sd2 from the four integrators and their inverses-Sh etc. A reference voltage SM is applied to each comparator derived by applying the above four signals and their inversers to a diode OR gate 100 to obtain the highest signal. Resistors 1R and 9R give 90% of this highest value which is used as the reference input. The highest signal gives a corresponding output on one of the terminals 421-428. Other outputs may be produced from signals exceeding 90% of the highest, such a multiple output being used to reject the character as described in the parent case. For each comparator stage a further similar comparator may be provided receiving the same signal 8, h etc. and a fixed reference signal. This comparator produces an output indicating that the contrast between two predetermined portions elemental area scanned is higher than a given value, i.e. that the elemental area does in fact include the edge of a character stroke. A gate receives the outputs from both comparators and passes a signal only if both are present.
