Abstract

1,009,661. Treating artificial fibres to improve their dyeability. MONTECATINI SOC. GENERALE PER L'INDUSTRIA MINERARIA E CHIMICA. May 23, 1963 [May 24, 1962], No. 20566/63. Heading B5B. Fibres etc. obtained by melt-spinning a mixture of a synthetic polymer and a basic organic nitrogen-containing polymeric tinctorial modifier are treated with N-mono- and/or diglycidyl derivatives of aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic amines or of their mono- or dichlorohydroxy-propyl derivatives, e.g. the N- mono- and/or di-glycidyl derivatives of ndodecylamine or of n-octadecylamine, the N- mono- and/or di-chlorohydroxypropyl derivatives of n-dodecylamine or of octadecylamine, N-glycidylpiperazine,N,N<SP>1</SP>-diglycidylpiperazine, N-chlorohydroxypropylpiperazine or N,N<SP>1</SP>- dichlorohydroxypropylpiperazine. The treating agent may be applied in the form of a solution or dispersion in water or in an organic solvent or in the anhydrous undissolved or undispersed state. The treating time and temperature may be from a few seconds to 3 hours at a temperature ranging from room temperature to 10‹ C. below the softening point of the synthetic polymer, and in the case of fibres, can be carried out before the stretching of the fibres. The polymer preferably comprises at least 75% by weight of the fibres and the polymer is preferably a polyolefine, particularly polypropylene comprising predominantly isotactic macromolecules. Alternatively the polymer may be a polyamide, a polyester, an acrylic polymer or copolymer or a vinyl polymer or copolymer. The basic nitrogen containing polymer may be a polyalkylenimine, or a nitrogen polycondensate of epichlorhydrin, having a specific viscosity between 0À1 and 0À7 (determined at 25‹ C. on a 1% solution of the polymer in isopropanol). In the melt-spinning of fibres to be treated according to the invention, the melt may contain a small proportion of an agent for dispersing the basic nitrogen polycondensate in the fibre-forming polymer. A list of dispersing agents is given. Fibres treated according to the invention may be monofilaments, multifilament yarns, or staple fibres. The treatment of fibres etc. according to the invention improves their receptivity for acid metallized and dispersed dyestuffs and the fastness of the dyed fibres to light is improved.
