Abstract

Dentifrice compositions comprise an enamel-solubility-reducing material comprising: (a) a water-soluble fluoride salt providing at least 25 p.p.m. of the dentrifrice of fluoride ions, the total amount of ionized and anionized fluorine not exceeding 4000 p.p.m. p (b) Stannous tin in the form of a water-soluble salt providing a total content of stannous tin in solution of from 5000 to 15 000 p.p.m. (c) a water-soluble source of six-carbon aldonate groups capable of forming water-soluble chemical complexes with stannous tin, the molar ratio of aldenate-groups to stannous tin being in the range 1:1 to 3:1, the molar ratio of stannous tin to fluoride ions being greater than 1:1 and the dentifrice having a pH of from 5-7 when measured by a specified procedure. Specified fluoride salts are stannous, sodium and potassium fluorides (Prepared), indium, palladium, ferrous and lithium fluorides and water soluble complex salts e.g. fluo-silicates, -zirconates, -stannites, -borates and -titanates. Specified stannous salts are aldonates and stannous fluoride (preferred), stannous mixed halides, and stannous sulphate. Suitable aldonates are the gluconate group, i.e. such compounds as gluconic acid, gluconates and glucono-lactone and other six-carbon aldonates of the D and L series. The dentifrices may contain conventional abrasives especially condensed phosphates, forming agents, thickeners, flavours, colours and humectants.
