Abstract

1,009,436. Tobacco. GENERAL CIGAR CO. Inc. May 7, 1962 [May 9, 1961], No. 17463/62. Heading A2C. Chopped tobacco in aqueous suspension is homogenized by heating to a temperature of at least 265‹F. at a pressure of at least 70 p.s.i.g. in contact with oxygen and the resulting slurry is either dried and formed into shreds, rods, filaments or sheets, or it is used as a binding agent for finely divided tobacco. Preferably the pressure is at least 300 p.s.i.g. and the temperature 285‹C. to 320‹C. The tobacco may be heated for from 10-40 minutes in contact with 95% by volume of oxygen. When made into sheets the slurry is spread on a steel belt, dried, reordered, and wound on a roll. Humectants and plasticizers such as glycerol, sorbitol and various glycols may be added to the slurry or to the finished tobacco sheet. Quantitative process examples are given.
