Abstract

A method of grinding the end surface of the lip 6 of a shaft sealing ring 1 comprises grinding the surface with a tool 4 which is conical corresponding to the angle required on the lip and has an external diameter at least equal to the largest diameter of the surface. The ring is supported on a resilient member 3 in a worktable 2 and automatically centres itself when the tool is lowered into engagement with the lip. The ring may be prevented from rotating by surface contact with the member 3 or by suction. The swarf may also be removed by the suction air through the interior of the worktable.
