Abstract

Crimp, Fuzz or other curl is removed from or reduced in hair by treating it with a cream or paste containing beeswax, a steerate and a thioglycolate, e.g. ammonium thioglycolate, which holds the hair under tension while reacting with the outer layer of the hair to change its natural set. After the treatment any residual chemical materials may be removed by washing and a neutraliser applied. The stearate is preferably glyceryl monostearate and the composition may also contain suitable wetting agents and a conditioner for the hair. The thioglycolate may comprise 30-38% by weight of the composition. The hair may be subjected to the action of the composition for not less than 10 minutes and not more than 25 minutes. In the preparation of a cream the glyceryl monstearate, beeswax, conditioner for the hair and wetting agent may be first mixed at an elevated temperature approaching the boiling point of water, cooled to a lower temperature and mixed with ammonium thioglycolate in a 40% by weight aqueous solution, the mixture then being rapidly stirred until a cream is formed and then being packed in a collapsible tube.
