Abstract
1,008,730. Steam turbines. STAL-LAVAL TURBIN A.B. Feb. 18, 1963 [May 17, 1962], No. 6473/63, Heading FIT. A radial flow turbine steam chest having chambers for steam at different pressures and temperatures is divided into axially adjacent chambers by one or more helical walls, one of the the chambers being a steam admission chamber having a progressively decreasing flow area from the inlet or inlets and another of the chambers being an extraction chamber with progressively increasing flow area towards an extraction steam outlet. A radial flow turbine steam chest is divided axially by a helical wall 8, Figs. 1, 5, into an admission chamber 9, receiving steam through ports 14, 15, and into extraction chambers 10, 11 bounded by spiral walls 4, 5 and an outer casing 2. Steam from the turbine enters chambers 10, 11 through holes 20, Fig. 2, in the chest end plate 1 adjacent the turbine and is exhausted through pipes 16, 17. Steam is fed to the turbine from chamber 9 through annular passage 18 surrounding inner casing 7 and through nozzles 19 in end plate 1. The flow area of chamber 9 decreases from the inlets 14, 15 and that of chambers 10, 11 increases towards the outlets 16, 17. Leakage from the turbine shaft gland is drawn off through collector 22 and port 24. The walls 4, 5 may be supported from the end plate 3 remote from the turbine. In a modification the steam chest is axially divided into two sections each with its own wall 8 and the space between the walls can be evacuated.
