Abstract
100,861. Nicholson, G. R., and Horsley, A. B. April 13, 1916. Siphons.-A siphon is provided with liquid traps at its inlet and outlet ends, and an auxiliary siphon is connected at the outlet end. The siphon remains primed when the liquid level falls below the inlet. The main siphon a, Fig. 1, is provided with traps e, f and with an auxiliary siphon b connected to the outlet. The lower edge k of the bend m must be above the inlet trap e and is preferably at the level of the inlet c. A vent pipe n, trapped at o, is connected at the junction of the two siphons. The inlet c is connected near the bottom of the tank to be emptied, and the siphon is initially filled with liquid. Liquid is discharged by the siphon until the level in the tank falls sufficiently to allow air to be drawn in through the pipe n. The flow then stops, and the main siphon a remains filled. Any rise in the level of liquid over the inlet c causes an equivalent quantity of liquid to be displaced over the edge k. A rapid rise of the level over the inlet c causes the air to be driven out of the siphon b, which then runs full. The outlet h of the siphon may also be provided with a trap, and the vent pipe n may be constructed, as shown in Fig. 3, with a lip s and a closed lower end n<1>.
