Abstract

Lycopene is obtained by growing a strain of Blakeslea trispora in a fermentation medium consisting of a proteinaceous nutrient and an energy furnishing nutrient at a pH of 7.0-9.5. The organism used may be a single strain or mixtures of plus and minus strains, suitable strains being NRRL 2546, 2547, 9159 and 9216. The protein may be fish meal, fish solubles, meat extract, tankage, fish or mammal stick liquors, or derived from corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, or yeast. The energy furnishing material may be a carbohydrate, e.g. glucose, fructose, sucrose or starch dextrins or a fatty acid or salt or ester thereof, e.g. fats, oils, sodium acetate, oleic acid or glyceryl oleate. The pH of the medium is maintained in the range 7.0-9.5 by addition of alkali if required, e.g. ammonia, or a hydroxide, carbonate or phosphate of ammonium, an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal. The temperature is maintained at 20-35 DEG C. and fermentation continued for 4-7 days with aeration. The lycopene or mycelium containing it is added to poultry food.
