Abstract

1,008,404. Films. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. Oct. 13, 1961 [Oct. 13, 1960], No. 36895/ 61. Addition to 849,466. Drawings to Specification. Heading B5B. In a process for the manufacture of films of artificial thermoplastic material wherein a heated tube of artificial thermoplastic material is disteneded by the application of internal pressure to form a tube of larger diameter while the zone of transistion between the narrower and wider portions of the tube is in an elastic state, during the distention at least two concentric annular portions of at least a part of the wall of the tube in the zone of transition are so heated that a temperature gradient or gradients are created across the said part of the wall, at least one of said concentric portions being heated to a temperature within a range extending from the crystallite melting point or softening point of the thermoplastic material to 60‹ C. below the said point and at least one other of the said concentric portions being in the molten state at a temperature within a range extending from a temperature slightly below the crystallite melting point or softening point to a temperature above the said point, and the wider portion of the tube is maintained in its distended state while being cooled. Specified materials include polyolefins, e.g. polyethylene and polypropylene, polymers of olefins of high molecular weight, polyfluoroethylenes and polyvinyl chloride. The concentric portion of the wall of the tube that is in the molten state may have a temperature not more than 60‹ C. above the crystallite melting point or softening point. Either the outer part of the wall of the tube or the inner part of the wall of the tube or both may be heated to a temperature above the crystallite melting point and the remainder of the wall of the tube may be maintained at a temperature within a range extending from the crystallite melting point or softening point to 60‹ C. below the said point. Alternatively, an annular portion of the wall of a tube issuing from an extruder in the molten state may be cooled to a temperature within a range extending from the crystallite melting point or softening point to 60‹ C. below the said point. Heating of the film may be effected by passage through a bath or spray of a hot liquid, or a blast of hot gas, or by radiation. Films so made have strengths from about 200-1000 kg. per sq. cm., and corresponding elongations from about 50 to several hundred per cent, e.g. 500%, the strengths and elongations of the films obtained being varied by variation of the temperature distribution across the wall of the tube. This may be achieved by varying the bath temperature or the velocity at which the tube is fed into the tempering bath or other tempering device.
