Abstract
1,008,340. Metal-vapour discharge apparatus. M-O VALVE CO. Ltd, R. E. BRITTAIN, and W. R. MAYBERRY. May 8, 1964 [May 20, 1963], No. 19949/63. Heading H1D. A gas-filled liquid cathode discharge tube comprises a rod 9, the end 3 of which forms an. anode which is spaced 0.5 to 2 mm. from an apertured closure member 12 of a trigger electrode 4 comprising a tubular metal member 10 supported by a tubular insulator 8 surrounding the rod 9, the spacing between the rod 9 and the member 10 lying in the range of 1 to 4 mm.; the pressure of the gas filling lies within the range of 0.3 to 1À0 times the pressure for which the anode breakdown voltage would be 5 kV. in a device of identical construction having a gas filling of the same composition. The filling may be argon at a pressure in the range of 0.2 to 0.3 torr. The cathode 2 consists of mercury containing a small proportion of at least one of the alkaline earth metals Ba, Sr, Ca or Mg, the total amount of the additive being such that if the mercury is rolled over a glass surface it tends to stick to that surface. An amount of barium lying in the range of 1 to 10 mg per c.c. of mercury may be added by vaporizing by eddy current heating a number of barium getter elements 17 mounted on a bracket 14 projecting from the member 12. The trigger electrode 4 is connected by a lead 16 to a terminal 15.
