Abstract

1,008,212. Films. FUJI SHASHIN FILM KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Nov. 15, 1963 [Nov. 21, 1962], No. 45298/63. Heading B5B. In the manufacture of thermoplastic films by solution casting the film is stripped from the carrier on which the solution is east and passed through a drying zone in which the edges of the film are held by retaining means in a manner such that the width of the film does not substantially shrink or stretch. Preferably the film is supported along its edges by a tenter device, and after passing through the drying zone the drying of the film is completed by passing the film through a drying chamber. Specified materials include cellulose acetate and triacetate, cellulose acetatebutyrate, polycarbonates, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers and polyvinyl alcohol. In apparatus as shown, a solution of film-forming material in tank 1 is spread on the surface of the endless belt 8, and after preliminary heating the soft film 13 (Fig. 2) is stripped from the belt at 9 and held between clips of the tenter device 12 while being dried in the drying zone 3. There after the film is fed into the drying chamber 4 where drying is completed.
